Frequently asked questions.

  • No. Unfortunately, insurance is limiting when treating weight issues and don’t account for all of the additional support given throughout the month.

If appropriate, I will order labs and medications that may be covered under your insurance. However, I cannot guarantee that your insurance will cover these.

  • That is up to you!

The scale is a number. While it gives important information, it does not tell the whole story. This is why I do not rely solely on it.

I prefer to get a starting weight for everyone. After that, we can discuss if this is something that will benefit you. Some medications do require regular weight-ins to monitor effectiveness.

  • Sure. Prevention is my passion. Almost everyone should be eating the same types of foods. If you or your child are concerned about some unhealthy habits that have developed, then we welcome you.

It is important to note, medication is not appropriate in this circumstance so services will be limited to lifestyle modification.

  • “Compounding” is a process where a pharmacy takes an active ingredient and mixes it to make it in a form that a patient can use. They are used for many reasons.

Due to availability and cost of many of these medications, there may be circumstances where compounded medication may be considered as a last option.

  • No. Medications and labs are extra but may be covered under your insurance. I will submit medications to your insurance and provide prior authorizations as necessary but cannot guarantee that they will be approved.

You may ask to get labs through your primary medical provider if you prefer.

  • Recently, the AAP has developed practice guidelines for weight treatment. 26 hours of direct interaction over up to 12 months is recommended. By seeing your child monthly for a year, including the consultation month, as well as joining a 12-week group (which are awesome), your child should get the 26 hours of intervention. You should end up with more value as there are newsletters and motivation throughout the month.

  • I see patients by appointment. There will be some appointments available after school and on weeknights.

I hate to take my kids out of school for appointments so I get it. Telehealth options may be available if needed during school hours. However, I find that Telehealth is just not as effective as in-person visits.

Group Sessions should start in the summer, 2024. During the school year, groups will always be after school hours.

  • Preference is made to adolescents and parents who are current members at Maverick. If space is available, I may open it to nonmembers. Please call me at 785-215-4744 or email me for any questions.

  • NO! While there is worthwhile insight from tracking what you eat, it is not a way to live a life. I focus on balance and intuitive eating. I do teach people to read labels because of the important information that you can find from them but in most cases, any discussion of grams and calories is educational only.

  • This is completely up to you. Everyone is different. I would anticipate around 6 months-12 months to make sure those pesky bad habits don’t return but you are welcome to continue longer as you see fit.

You can cancel your membership at any time and will not be charged for the next month as long as you notify me in writing by the 25th of the current month.

  • You won't find any before and after images here. Although they can be inspiring to some, they only depict external transformations as if that is the only thing that matters. Also, I dislike how the before photos portray people as unhappy. Remember, you are still the same beautiful person, both before and after. That's all that needs to be said.

  • One of the biggest things I try to get my patients to see is how unrealistic and potentially dangerous social media can be to our happiness. In order to avoid hippocracy (and because I really hate it), I stay away from posting both personally and professionally. Yes, I do have a Facebook page; I am not sure you can have a successuul business without one. But, that is not how I want to advertise myself so I am trying to avoid it as long as I can. Please spread the word about this clinic so I don’t have to start 😬.

  • Oh, great, you noticed! Most wellness clinics show pictures of food, plants, or people looking at peace with life. As my philosophy at Maverick, be different. I stress in my personal life and to patients that we need to get outside more and enjoy the beauty of nature. There are studies that show the benefits of this. There is also something called “awe” which is being studied. I won’t get into the details, but know that you will learn what I am talking about.

Also, the road to a healthier lifestyle is not only a journey, but an adventure. I use the language of travel in the clinic: maps, paths, journeys, roadblocks. It’s a great way for kids and adults alike to visualize the lifestyle modification process.

And, yes, these photos have been taken by my husband or myself.

    Thanks for asking!!
